Best Times to Go Deep Sea Fishing in New Jersey (Seasonal Guide)

Whether you're chasing tuna offshore, reeling in fluke close to shore, or planning a fun day out with friends and family, timing your deep sea fishing trip can make all the difference. At Canyon Eagle, we run trips out of Perth Amboy and Belmar, NJ — and we’ve seen firsthand which months deliver the hottest bites.

Here’s your seasonal breakdown of the best times to go deep sea fishing in New Jersey.

Spring (April – June): Fluke, Sea Bass, and Striped Bass Start Heating Up

Spring kicks off the fishing season in New Jersey. As the water warms up:

  • Fluke (also known as summer flounder) start showing up inshore.

  • Black sea bass open up in May and provide excellent action on reefs and wrecks.

  • Striped bass migrate along the coast and are active in April and May.

If you’re looking for a light-tackle trip or planning a private party boat charter, spring is the perfect time to get out before the summer crowds.

Summer (July – August): Peak Season for Tuna, Mahi, and Shark

Summer is prime time for offshore and canyon trips. During July and August, you can target:

  • Yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, and occasionally bigeye.

  • Mahi-mahi (dolphin fish) around lobster pots and floating debris.

  • Makos and other sharks, for those looking for an adrenaline rush.

Our Canyon Eagle III offers both open boat and private deep sea fishing trips, perfect for large groups or serious anglers.

Fall (September – November): Best Time for Blackfish, Blues & Wreck Fishing

Fall offers excellent fishing without the summer heat. As baitfish migrate south, predator fish go on a feeding frenzy.

  • Blackfish (tautog) season opens late fall — a favorite for bottom fishermen.

  • Bluefish blitzes happen offshore and near jetties.

  • Sea bass and porgies remain active on deep-water wrecks.

This is also the perfect time to book a private fishing charter before winter hits. Bonus: the fall scenery on the water is stunning.

Winter (December – March): Cod, Ling, and Hardcore Wreck Trips

While most boats shut down, Canyon Eagle offers select winter wreck trips targeting:

  • Ling, cod, pollock, and black sea bass

  • Quiet, uncrowded trips — just dress warm and bring hot coffee

For experienced anglers or those looking to extend the season, winter trips can be very rewarding.

Bonus Tips: Best Time of Day to Fish

  • Early mornings: Best for striped bass, fluke, and tuna

  • Late afternoons: Great for sunset cruises mixed with inshore fishing

  • Tide shifts: Fish feed heavily during moving water (check local tides before your trip)
